I’ve been waiting for the songs of this generation. This week on CNN, the one, powerful  song we all needed to hear rang out. Written and performed by Marjory Stoneham Douglas students it speaks for itself. For the 3 minute performance go here. For the words, see below.

Shine – words and music by Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Pena

You, You took my city away
You tore down the walls
And opened up all the gates
You, you ruined this town
You burned all of the bridges
And you slowly let us drown

But you’re not going to knock us down
We’ll get back up again
You may have hurt us
But I promise we’ll be stronger and

We’re not going to let you win
We’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark
But together we will shine the light and wooo ohoh
We will be something special ohohoh
We’re going to shine

We’re, we’re going to stand tall
Going to raise our voices so we never, ever fall
We’re done with all your little games
We’re tired of hearing that
We’re too young to ever make a change

‘cause you’re not going to knock us down
We’ll get back up again
You may have hurt us
But I promise we’ll be stronger and

We’re not going to let you win
We’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark
But together we will shine the light

We can hug a little tighter
We can love a little more
Love a little harder
We can stand up and roar

If we all come together
It will be alright
Stand up for one another
And, we’ll never give up the fight

We’re not going to let you win
We’re putting up a fight
You may have brought the dark
But together we will shine the light and wooo ohoh
We will be something special ohohoh
We’re going to shine

At the end the students made an ask of all the rest of us– do something, one thing, any little thing. As one said: “The smallest of words can make the biggest difference.”

Little Hinge Action Ideas:

  • Share the live performance on your Facebook newsfeed.
  • Share the words. Copy and past them from above and post wherever you see fit.
  • Watch the entire CNN Town Hall with the MSD students however your cable provider allows.
  • Call Marco Rubio’s office at 202-224-3041 in Washington and THANK HIM for showing up at the Town Hall.  By engaging he made himself open to hearing and considering opposing views. Regardless of his position, or your position on his positions, he should be encouraged for participating in dialogue with constituents. There are so many who do not.
  • Commit on at least one action this week. If possible, commit to one action per week until change of any sort goes into effect.
  • Donate to Giffords.org, Gabby Giffords PAC to support and bring new gun sanity politicians into office. Consider a $17 donation in honor of those who fell at Parkland.
  • Check out 10 other possible steps in last week’s Little Hinge’s post.
  • Send us more suggestions for future actions via email that we share on future posts
